Cold Brew Coffee to Beat the Hong Kong Heat

Hong Kong summers can be tough and cold brew coffee might just be your way out of this Hong Kong heat.

What’s the buzz about cold brew coffee?

In recent years, cold brew coffee has gained much popularity in Hong Kong and you might wonder how it is different from an iced Americano - apart from the fact that it is often packaged in a fancy glass bottle. In fact, the difference is huge:

Brew time
Iced coffee is brewed as hot coffee for a few minutes and poured over ice or cooled down, whereas cold brew is brewed by cold or room temperature water for 12 to 24 hours.
Acidity
Cold brew coffee is 60% less acidic than regular coffee and is better for those who have a sensitive stomach.
Coffee to water ratio
Cold brew is typically made with a higher ratio of coffee to water (around 1:3 to 1:8), which is two to two-and-a-half times more than iced coffee.
Flavor profile
As the coffee grounds used for cold brew coffee are not exposed to high temperatures, cold brews usually taste smoother, sweeter, more flavorful and less bitter.
Storage
While iced coffee should be drunk as soon as it’s made, cold brew can be stored in the fridge for 10 to 14 days.

How to Make Cold Brew?

Coarsely ground beans have to be steeped in filtered, room temperature or cold water for 12 to 24 hours. The coffee slowly infuses into the water during this time, which brings you a strong, concentrated brew that leaves behind the compounds that make coffee taste bitter and sour. The concentration of the brew can be adjusted by steeping the beans for a shorter or longer period.

Cold brew can be served as it is, or iced. Some people even make hot coffee with the cold brew concentrate by simply adding hot water to it. You can also be creative and add soda water or flavored syrup to your cold brew concentrate, which can last for up to two weeks!
